Just because it's good to acknowledge the details that make up a piece of work.

(Never forget)

STUDIO VIEWS

Last month I wrote about my week painting in Vermont and then moving into my new studio space. I am in, and I am happy. I have actually done a good amount of work in the new space. I've kept it fairly sparse, a large table, a few rolling carts, my product and supplies of course and a few fans, a ladder. I'm sure it will fill up as time goes by!

I've already met several of the artists, it seems like a nice community. It is walking distance from my home, and plenty of restaurants and coffee nearby.

Without further ado, here are some photos, starting Day 1:

It is not only about making the art.  Two weeks ago I had my work professional photographed by Myk Ostrowski, an artist/photograper who works in the building across the way:

Although my iphone photos are fine for social media and blogs, submitting to shows, galleries and residencies demands better quality and certain sizing, which I know very little about. I say leave the expert information to the experts. And there is the submitting to the shows and residencies, and schlepping artwork to galleries and either getting in or often not. Openings, museums, being out in the world looking at other art, when all you want to do is be in the studio working.

I am happy most everyday that I get to do what I love. I further my art practice through frustration and challenges and sheer grit, and it is the one way I feel I can leave a mark. After so many years of working on other creative endeavors and businesses, I feel like I'm home again.

Susan Siefer's Blogpost

My Dreamy Week of Painting

Bennington, Vermont, at dusk:

I experienced a  breakthrough of my work in 2015 at Montserrat College of Art when I took a workshop with Tim Hawkesworth and Lala Zeitlyn.  I had returned to studio painting after a many decade hiatus. From these two I learned focus and determination and the importance of the practice. I gained confidence. I honed in on some skills.  My work changed, but still held true to the stories behind it.

This summer, for one week, I worked again with Tim and Lala. This was at Bennington College in Vermont, a program through Art New England.  It was a chance to do nothing but paint, eat, sleep and talk with and learn from other artists. The most beneficial part being the morning talks by Tim and the soul searching, intense one on one discussions with Tim and Lala about artmaking, the progression of my work, the frustration and fear of digging deeper, the satisfaction of what comes out on the other side.

I believe I have stories to tell with my work. I have lived many "lives" and find myself at the perfect place to be right now, for me. For a little background, see my about page.

So, on to the future whatever that might be. Here are a few pieces I worked on during that magical week, all mixed media on canvas.

My first night, I was filled with excited energy and views of florescent sunsets:

I was looking at a lot of Richard Diebenkorn's work by way of Matisse:

I hope you are having a magical summer as well.
